Sometimes, an auto salvage yard serves as more than just a peripheral option in your search for car parts. Under certain circumstances, you may discover that a salvage yard part can provide all the functionality you need, making it a much more sensible purchase than anything from a dealer or new-parts seller.

You might find yourself pleasantly surprised when you check an auto salvage yard for lightly used parts. Recent-model cars may still have nice fenders or cabin components that require only a bit of cleaning or polishing. Slight dents or marks may not deter you from adding a salvage part to your car.

Many critical automotive components hide beneath hoods or along the undercarriage of vehicles. As long as these parts function well and fit your car's specific make and model year, you can buy with confidence. If you lack automotive knowledge, bring a mechanic with you to inspect the part before you agree to buy it.

            2. You Don't Want to Pay Extra for New Parts

You can find a given auto part at multiple price points. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) parts tend to command the highest prices. Aftermarket parts usually cost somewhat less (sometimes at the cost of inferior quality). Either of these options, however, will cost more than salvage parts.

If you just need a functional part for your car, a salvage part will save you money, which you can then put toward other parts or automotive expenses. One perk of buying salvage parts lies in the fact that most of them once commanded a premium price as new, top-quality OEM parts.

Even if you only see aftermarket versions of the part you need at the salvage yard, you can often get good value and service from these parts despite their third-party origins. Some aftermarket parts can even exceed the quality of their OEM counterparts.

Some vehicles can pose special difficulties when it comes to finding replacement parts. If your car goes back a few generations in age, for instance, it may run on parts that the manufacturer stopped producing many years ago. Aficionados who sell such parts privately may demand high prices for these rarities.

Salvage yards serve as the natural resting places for cars of all vintages. Some salvage yards even specialize in buying and selling classic car parts, while others take any and all vehicles, including the antiques. With luck, you'll the obsolete parts your car needs (and a source for future such parts) at reasonable prices.

If you worry about contributing to the problem of environmental waste, buy your car parts from a salvage yard whenever you reasonably can. This form of recycling keeps the parts out of landfills and takes them out of the energy-intensive manufacturing loop.

2 TIMES TO REBUILD YOUR CAR'S ENGINE

A rebuilt engine isn't the most common car repair, but there are a few times when a rebuild is the best repair for the situation. Learn more about them.

A rebuilt engine is one that technicians stripped down to its most basic components and then completely reconstructed. The engine features refurbished or replaced parts, and it's essentially like-new even though it might have driven hundreds of thousands of miles. This isn't the most common repair, but there are two times when rebuilding a car's engine makes sense.

            1. Repair a Failed Engine on a Budget

Engines are expensive. You'll likely have to spend a few thousand dollars on auto work or a new vehicle if your car's engine fails.

First, you could choose to replace your current vehicle with a new one. This is the most expensive option, though, as both new and used cars cost a lot. The average price of a new car is

              over $37,000

, and used cars have an average price of about $20,000. Moreover, your current car won't mitigate this cost much if you trade it in since the engine doesn't work.

Second, you can opt to purchase a new engine and have it installed in your car. While this is more affordable than buying another car altogether, it's still a pricey route to go. New engines can run anywhere from $4,700 to $9,000 for high-end ones according to USA Today, which is still much more than most budget-minded drivers want to spend.

Third, you can have a mechanic remove a used engine from an identical vehicle and install it in yours. This typically costs from $1,800 to $4,000 for the engine and another several hundred dollars in labor costs. This is more affordable, but you don't know the condition of a used engine - and someone may have already driven a long way on it.

Finally, you'll probably pay a mechanic somewhere between

              $2,500 and $4,000

to rebuild your car's current engine. Although this is roughly comparable to the cost of a used engine, rebuilding is preferable because the condition of a rebuilt engine is essentially like-new. A used engine won't be refurbished and could break down soon, but a rebuilt one will last for a long time.

Of the four options that are available to you when your car's engine fails, a rebuilt engine is the most budget-friendly choice. It's affordable and leaves you with a reliable workhorse under the hood.

            2. Keep a Classic Car's Engine During Restoration

If you have a classic car and its engine is blown, the two main options are to install a used engine or rebuild the car's current one. Purchasing a classic car that's in good running condition isn't likely to be cheap, and installing a new engine that's made today wouldn't be true to the car's original mechanics. Classic car owners usually want their car to be as original as possible.

While you can try to find a used engine that's an exact match to your classic car's original, it can be difficult to locate used engines for these cars. Since there aren't many of them, there aren't a lot of used engines available. You'll have a much easier time finding a used engine for a popular and relatively new sedan than you will for a specialized car from long ago.

Thus, the most affordable and realistic option is to have a mechanic rebuild the engine. This will be affordable and keep your engine as original as possible, and a mechanic can source parts as they're needed for the rebuild.

Buying parts from a salvage yard has a lot of positive benefits, and many people find it a great, costeffective option for them. But if you plan to go to the salvage yard to find the part you need for your car, you should implement some things so you are prepared when you get there.

            Plan Your Trip in Advance

Take the time to look at your vehicle, and figure out what parts you will need from the donor car in the salvage yard. If you need to, make a list of the parts important for the job at hand. If you are not sure what parts you need, you could end up having to go back several times to look everything over.

If your car has missing parts, you may need to do some research online to determine what parts you will need from the donor car. You may determine you need something extra when you get to the yard, but having a plan will make the trip easier and faster.

When you arrive at the salvage yard, you may find several models of cars have the part you need on them. Some of these parts will fit, and some may be slightly different than your parts. A good way to compare the part in the salvage yard to your part is to take pictures of your part from as many angles as possible.

When you are in the salvage yard looking at a part, the pictures are a useful tool to help determine if the part you found is right for your car or not. Sometimes, the difference may be a hole in the mounting bracket or a different pulley, but look carefully, because, in some cases, you can swap the accessories and make the part work for you.

Take the time to check your toolbox before you head to the salvage yard, making sure you have the right tools for the job. You can check the part on your car to determine what tools you need for the job before you leave home.

Take some extra tools with you if you have space, and if you need to remove a tire to get to the part, do not forget a lug wrench. Often, tools are not usually available at the salvage yard, so do not usually count on using one from there. Include things like gloves, cleaning supplies, and a penetrating oil or lubricant to help free up bolts and fasteners.

One common misconception with car parts is that a part must be from an identical make and model to fit your car. Many times, manufacturers used the same part across several models because it saves money. If you understand this, you can find a part that will fit in a car that you might not take a second look at otherwise.

Interchange guides used to be something only available to mechanics and salvage yards but are not readily available with a quick search online. If you have had a hard time finding parts for your specific car, try the interchange guides and get the parts you need from another model that is easier to find.

Many families maintain a constant effort to help their teens learn needed life skills and develop useful habits that will help them throughout their lives. One great way to encourage both soft skills and hard skills while having fun is to restore a project car together.

          1. Patience

Restoring a car generally takes a lot of time. The level of work needed by the vehicle you choose determines how much time you will have to put into the car, but even a simple project will call for your child to learn to be patient and wait for the results. In the modern world, where we expect immediate returns, this is a valuable trait to foster.

          2. Mechanical Expertise

Working on cars reaps hard skill returns. Your teenager will be better equipped to take care of their own cars in the future, and basic mechanical knowledge, including the ability to properly choose and wield tools of various types, will help them in other home maintenance and improvement projects later on. They may even decide to become a mechanic.

Most backyard restorers work on a limited budget. They must decide how to spend that budget and how to prioritize tasks. Does the car need a new transmission or a new paint job? How much should you spend on a used car? Should you choose a fun Mustang or a practical classic truck? Help your child to understand how to deploy financial resources for the maximum benefit.

          4. Teamwork

Will you work alongside your teen on the project car? Then they will learn the value of being able to work with others, not simply blasting ahead on their own. If more than one youngster is going to participate, they will all learn even more the need to delegate, let go of certain parts of a project, accept criticism, give criticism, and compromise.

As your child puts more and more time into the project car - and, for older kids, puts some of their own money into it as well - they will learn how to invest resources for the future. The child has only limited hours, for example, and they must choose how to spend those hours. If they spend them working on the car, they are investing in a future return rather than receiving an immediate benefit.

          6. Responsibility

A vehicle project is a big job with weighty responsibilities. The car must be restored to a condition that will provide safe transportation for others. It must be able to safely share the road with fellow cars. Parts must be replaced the right way - following instructions recommended by the manufacturer. To accomplish these, your child will have to show maturity and restraint by adhering to guidelines.

          7. Creativity

While much of the work will adhere to instructions and guidelines, your child has a lot of room for creative thinking. Together, you and your kids can decide what goals you want to achieve with the project. You may need to solve problems as they arise, utilizing workarounds and unconventional methods of repair. You'll also be able to choose interior and exterior decoration and design.

Anytime you purchase a car, you want to know as much about the vehicle as possible. When you buy a collectible car that's one-of-a-kind, though, there are some additional considerations to take into account. Before you buy any collectible car, find out the answers to these key questions.

How Readily Available Are Parts for the Car?

You can easily replace parts on a common car, and there are usually multiple original equipment manufacturer, aftermarket, and used parts available for you to choose. Because a lot of people drive these cars, there's a high demand for parts and the supply reflects the demand.

However, you may have a harder time if you need to find a specific part for a collectible car. Collectible cars are scarcer, so there's less of a demand and a smaller supply for their parts. Many of these models are also older, which makes finding used parts from a junkyard more difficult.

Before you buy a collectible car, make sure you have a source for any parts that might be needed in the future. Despite the challenges, you can still usually find parts if you search for them. Do your research to make sure you can, however, for you'll likely eventually need to order a component.

How Will the Car Be Stored?

Storage is especially important once you own a collectible car because protecting the vehicle from the elements and potential vandalism is essential to preserving the vehicle's value. You don't want a hailstorm or burglar to damage your car, and even the sun can fade interior trim and fabric over time.

The best way to protect your collectible car is to park it in a garage that can be locked. A carport provides some protection from the elements, but it doesn't give all-around protection in a secure place like a garage does. An uncovered driveway provides almost nothing in terms of protection.

In addition to parking your car in a garage, you might also want to keep it covered. You may find it inconvenient to cover your car each time you park it, but it helps prevent dust from collecting on the car. You're also less likely to accidentally scratch the paint while you move things in or out of the garage if the vehicle is covered.

Where Will the Car Be Parked When Driving?

Your home isn't the only parking situation to think about. Take a few minutes to consider where you'll park the car when you're out using the vehicle.

For example, when you park your collectible car on the street, you invite more dangers and risks than if you parked in a parking garage. With others parallel parking and vehicles of all sizes going by, your vehicle is liable to get bumped or scratched. This could happen in a parking lot too, but the chances of sustaining damage are less.

You may not have a lot of say as to where your car can be parked while outside, but you should at least be aware of what risks are involved. If you're able to, park in parking lots or garages rather than on the street - even if doing so is slightly more inconvenient.

Collectible cars are often covered by specialized auto insurance policies that have been specifically designed for less-common and high-value vehicles. These policies typically come with the same liability protections as other cars, but the coverage they offer for the car itself is stated value coverage.

There are many reasons that you may consider buying used parts from an automotive recycler or salvage yard. Sometimes you will not be able to buy used parts, but if the circumstances allow it, this option has many benefits that you may not have thought about.

          1. Financial Benefits

Used auto parts are often much cheaper than new, remanufactured, or even third-party parts that are available from parts stores. The used parts market is growing all the time, and recyclers have begun to streamline the business for customer ease. Because the prices are so much lower on many parts, people, businesses, and garages are even starting to work with salvage yards to reduce costs.

If you need an engine, transmission, or even an axle for your car, the salvage yard may be the best place to get the entire assembly. In many cases, the cost of the entire assembly is lower than buying a short block (and engine without any of the additional external parts) from the local dealer or even an engine rebuilder.

          2. Parts Availability

Finding the right part for your car is getting easier with parts search services. Many salvage yards subscribe to services that allow them to share inventory with other salvage operators, so if you have a specific part that you need, but the local yard does not have, they can find the part for you and ship it to your location.

These search services connect many different recyclers, which allows you to buy parts from all over the country without having to call many different salvage yards. The benefit to the buyer is that these services open up parts availability much further than ever before.

          3. Environmentally Friendly

When you buy parts from a salvage yard, you recycle something that might otherwise sit in the yard for years. Manufacturers use a lot of resources when making new parts, so buying used can also reduce the impact on the environment from manufacturing. While a need for new parts will always be present, reducing some of the stress on our resources is good for everyone.

Some parts are difficult to get, especially for old cars or trucks. The salvage yard may still have some of these parts when the dealer or parts store no longer carries them. In many salvage yards, you can look around for the parts you need and may discover some parts that you have not seen anywhere else.

Finding these rare parts depends on how often the salvage yard crushes cars and sends them to the metal recycles, so finding a yard that still has a lot of older parts increases your chance of finding a rare part.

When you need a part quickly and the dealer doesn't have it, the local salvage yard may have it on the shelf and ready. The parts may be used, but that doesn't mean the parts are not still in good shape. Many times, the car that the part came from was involved in an accident that did not affect the part you need.

The steering wheel accomplishes one of the most basic of all tasks for an automobile: guiding which way your wheels point. Behind this seemingly simple task lies a network of complicated components, each of which has an important role to play in guiding your car. Should any of these components fall into disrepair, the whole system may suffer the ramifications.

One of the most common signs that something has gone wrong in your steering system involves a steering wheel that feels loose in your hands. Such looseness usually manifests as a feeling of play, which can make it difficult to tell which way your wheels are turned. This article takes a closer look at the possible problems lurking behind this unsettling phenomenon.

          1. Worn Out Tie Rods

Virtually all cars manufactured today contain a type of steering system known as rack and pinion. Rack and pinion systems utilize components known as tie rods in order to move the wheels. The tie rods, which sit at either end of the steering rack, push and pull the wheels in and out in conjunction with the movement of the steering wheel.

Tie rods tend to experience a lot of wear and tear as the years go on. Not only do the tie rods experience regular use every time you turn your wheel, but they also absorb a lot of vibrations moving up from the wheels. Popping curbs, hitting potholes, and getting in minor fender-benders can place a lot of stress on the tie rods.

Eventually, the tip of the tie rod - usually referred to as the tie rod end - wears out. Worn out tie rods can no longer ensure that your wheels stay exactly in place. As a result, you may begin to notice a variety of symptoms. You may find your car tends to pull to one side or that your tires wear down unevenly. In addition, you may notice that your steering wheel feels especially loose or shaky in your hands.

          2. Worn Out Pitman Arm

The Pitman arm also plays a key role in creating a link between your steering wheel and your wheels. The Pitman arm connects directly to the steering box sector shaft. There, the Pitman arm works to translate the sector shaft's angular motion into the linear motion that controls your wheels. Don't worry too much if you find that explanation a little mystifying.

The key thing to understand involves how the Pitman arm behaves as it starts to wear down. Common symptoms of Pitman arm wear almost always involve the behavior of your steering wheel. You will likely find that your steering wheel exhibits looseness and excessive play. You may notice that you have to turn the steering wheel more than usual in order to get your wheels to respond.

Another sign of Pitman arm wear involves a tendency for your car to wander left and right while traveling down the road. Take your car to a mechanic as soon as possible. If your Pitman arm happens to fail completely, you won't be able to steer your car at all.

          3. Worn Out Ball Joints

Excessive steering wheel play, looseness, and a tendency to wander right or left may also mean that your car has problems with one or more of its ball joints. The ball joints connect your car's control arms to the steering knuckles. In addition to unusual steering wheel behavior, a worn out ball joint may also lead to odd clunking noises, uneven tire wear, and excessive vibrations.

Car owners often put off replacing worn steering system components because of the high costs involved. Fortunately, you can enjoy significant savings by purchasing a quality used part from a reputable dealer. Many people assume that the exhaust system on their car simply plays a passive role, allowing engine gases to exit your system in the least problematic place. Yet exhaust systems actually play a vital role in overall car performance, affecting everything from engine efficiency to the safety of the exhaust gases.

The importance of an exhaust system usually only comes into focus once problems arise. In particular, exhaust leaks can negatively affect your vehicle in a number of surprising ways. If you would like to learn more about your exhaust system, keep reading. This article outlines three common symptoms of an exhaust leak.

          1. Odd Popping Sounds

One of the most common signs of an exhaust leak involves popping sounds coming from beneath your hood. More specifically, this sound tends to occur as the result of a leaky exhaust manifold. The component known as the exhaust manifold acts as the point of connection between your engine and the rest of your exhaust system.

To ensure an air-tight seal, a special gasket lies between the exhaust manifold and the engine. This exhaust manifold gasket experiences a lot of structural stress as the result of high temperatures. Eventually the gasket may develop cracks. If these cracks continue all the way to the edge of the gasket, they may allow exhaust to escape.

Be aware that engine popping sounds may indicate a range of different problems, including faulty belts, dirty fuel injectors, and incorrect engine compression. Pay attention to how the popping sound responds when you rev your engine. If the sound speeds up, you likely have an exhaust leak on your hands.

          2. Decreased Performance

As an exhaust manifold gasket warms up with your car, it often expands enough to seal off any cracks. Such expansion can make it hard to diagnose a cracked gasket - and hence an exhaust leak - by sound alone. Any noises will cease once the gasket has swelled up enough to seal off the crack.

Another strong indication that you have a bad exhaust manifold gasket involves inexplicable performance decreases. You may notice that your car has a harder time accelerating or generating its usual amount of power. More importantly, you may find that your fuel economy has suddenly begun to nose dive.

A leaky exhaust manifold gasket means that, instead of passing out through your exhaust pipe, exhaust gases may escape directly under your hood, where it can be sucked into the vehicle's cabin. These gases also often end up getting sucked back in through your air intake, leading to less than efficient combustion.

Likewise, an exhaust leak also often affects the ability of your oxygen sensor to take correct readings. The oxygen sensor measures oxygen levels in the exhaust leaving your car. An incorrect reading can cause your engine to increase or decrease the amount of fuel it sends to the engine.

The faulty information provided by the oxygen sensor often has the net result of decreasing the efficiency of your engine, thus lowering the miles you get per gallon.

          3. Unusual Vibrations

Regardless of where it exists in your system, an exhaust leak often leads to an unusual amount of vibration in your car. Such vibrations may affect your gas pedal, steering wheel, or gear shifter. To understand why this happens, you must appreciate that exhaust travels out of your engine at an incredibly high speed.

An exhaust system has a streamlined design meant to facilitate the smooth passage of exhaust gases out of your car. Even a tiny leak allows exhaust to escape in places where it shouldn't, creating turbulence in the overall flow. The larger the leak hole, the harsher the vibrations will feel inside of your car.

Exhaust leaks hurt your car's performance and lead to higher fuel bills. Fortunately, car owners can replace defective parts at a fraction of the cost by choosing a quality used component. Buying used auto parts is a good idea for a lot of reasons. For example, buying used parts is good for the environment, and you can save money. But not every yard makes it easy to find your parts. You need to understand a little about the parts you are looking for and know where to get the information you need to buy the right part.

Salvage yards operate several ways. Some yards pull all the good parts from a vehicle, catalog them, and put the parts in storage until someone asks for them. Other yards prefer to leave the car intact in the yard and allow the buyer to go and get the parts they need off the vehicle. Both systems have advantages and disadvantages.

When you need a specific part, a salvage yard that pulls all the parts will know if they have the part with a quick search of the computer inventory. On the other hand, a yard that doesn't pull parts may or may not know if they have a part, but they are likely to have more small parts available that are not usually removed from the car. But you will need to go to the yard and search for the parts you need.

When you are looking for a specific part for your vehicle, you can call or visit the salvage yard to inquire about the component. If they do not have the part, ask them to look and see if there is a part listed in the interchange guide that can fit your car.

Vehicle manufacturers often use the same part across several models of vehicles because the practice saves the manufacturer money. And if you know how to search the interchange system, you can more easily find the part you need.

If the salvage yard you are working with does not have interchange information, you can search online to get the information you need. The interchange system will list the year, make, and model of cars that have the part you need, but you have to be careful to check the engine information. Sometimes, a car that is listed has several engine options, and only one of those models has the part you need.

When you are working with a salvage yard that allows you to search the yard and pull your parts, make sure you know what you need. One way to ensure you get the right part is to take pictures of your part with your cell phone. You can use the photos as a reference in the yard to be sure you have the right part before taking it off the salvage vehicle. That way, you are not wasting time on something you can't use.

          DON'T ASSUME

When you are working with a yard that has already pulled the parts off the car, make sure you match up the part with your old part. Don't just assume that the part is the right one.

The salvage yard won't intentionally try to give you the wrong part, but things can get mixed up, and since you didn't pull the part yourself, you should use some caution and double check everything. If you have the old part with you, this is easy to do. Lay the parts next to each other and verify that they have all the right connections and everything is oriented correctly.

The following are six mistakes you need to avoid if you go to a salvage yard to look for used auto parts.

          1. FAILING TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF SALVAGE YARD PERSONNEL

Personnel at a scrap yard will have a better idea of what parts are available than you will have from browsing over the yard.

Ask salvage yard personnel your questions. Also, if you want a particular part, call ahead and ask if the yard has it rather than wasting a trip if the yard doesn't have what you're looking for.

          2. NOT HAVING APPROPRIATE SAFETY EQUIPMENT

If you will be moving heavy parts and equipment pieces at a salvage yard, you need to protect yourself against the potential hazards with safety equipment.

Bring heavy-duty work boots, work gloves, and a helmet if you will be out in the yard rummaging through parts and vehicles. You should also bring a toolbox with all the tools you need to safely disassemble equipment and parts you'll look at.

          3. NOT COMING READY TO TRANSPORT PARTS

If you visit the yard for parts that you'd like to get quickly, you should bring a vehicle capable of transporting your parts with you.

If you wait to have your desired parts delivered, this could delay the arrival of your parts. Also, if you wait to come back and pick parts up later, another buyer may find the part you're interested in before you return.

          4. NEGLECTING TO ASK ABOUT WARRANTIES

These days, many scrap yards will offer you warranties on parts so you can be sure that parts will operate properly. Warranties are important at salvage yards because, in many cases, you may have limited ability to gauge an item's condition before you commit to purchase.

In addition to looking for warranty options, you should also test parts before purchase and try to plug in electrical equipment to make sure it operates properly. This will minimize the chances that you'll purchase a part that doesn't work and that a warranty doesn't cover.

          5. BEING UNAWARE OF THE SALVAGE YARD'S SAFETY POLICIES

Because many potential safety hazards exist around a salvage yard, they will usually post safety policies that you need to adhere to.

Neglecting to learn the safety policies of the scrap yard you work with could get you in trouble. You want to form a lasting partnership with the scrap yard and avoid creating problems or risks for the yard. Respecting safety policies and rules will go a long way in making your salvage yard visits more productive and convenient.

Delivery can be an arduous and cumbersome task. This is especially true if you don't own a vehicle that's appropriate for transporting heavy auto parts. Ask about delivery capabilities and take advantage of them if they're available to you.

Most cars produced today contain onboard computers that control everything from air conditioner temperatures to engine timing. These computers require detailed information from your car in order to optimize the way it performs. One of the most important pieces of information comes from the oxygen sensor.

Unfortunately, many people don't know very much about their oxygen sensor - right up until the moment it goes bad and starts causing all sorts of problems. If you believe that knowledge is the key to preventing automotive problems, keep reading. This article will introduce the role the oxygen sensor plays as well as some of the problems it commonly experiences.

          THE OXYGEN SENSOR'S ROLE

The oxygen sensor lies at the heart of your car's feedback control loop. This component can be found in your car's exhaust manifold where it actively monitors the level of oxygen present in your car's exhaust. This information, in turn, allows the computer to calculate how efficiently combustion is taking place inside your engine.

Ideally, most of the oxygen that enters your cylinders will combust along with the gasoline. When oxygen levels fall out of an acceptable threshold, problems ensue. Abnormally low oxygen levels indicate a problem with the air-fuel mixture. In this case, there isn't enough air mixing with the gasoline. As a result, an unacceptable amount of gas is likely passing out of your exhaust without combusting.

An overly lean air-fuel mixture indicates the opposite problem - in other words, not enough fuel is entering the cylinders. As a result, oxygen levels remain much higher than they should be because there simply isn't enough gasoline to burn up all of the oxygen.

In either case, the oxygen sensor's data passes the information to the computer. The computer analyzes this information and, if necessary, makes the appropriate adjustments to the fuel injectors to ensure a more harmonious air-fuel mixture.

          OXYGEN SENSOR MECHANICS

Now that you understand the general purpose of the oxygen sensor, you're probably wondering how it manages to collect such specific information - let alone communicate it to your car's computer. When you boil it down, an oxygen sensor operates much like a tiny generator. The sensor codifies information about the oxygen level into an electrical signal.

The strength of this signal expresses how much - or little - oxygen is present. An oxygen sensor consists of a small bulb covered with a highly porous coating of platinum. The inside of the sensor vents directly to the outside of your car, permitting air to flow into the bulb.

The science of an oxygen sensor can get pretty complex. At the end of the day, what you really need to know is that differences in the oxygen levels of your exhaust as well as the outside air cause the electrical voltage to form. The greater this difference, the stronger the voltage will be.

          OXYGEN SENSOR PROBLEMS

Another important thing to know about your oxygen sensor is that it will only work once it has reached a temperature of approximately 600 degrees Fahrenheit. Oxygen sensors have to be built to withstand such temperatures and the constant bombardment of highly toxic exhaust gases.

Nonetheless, those harsh conditions will gradually wear an oxygen sensor down. Over time, carbon deposits accumulate on the outside of the sensor. These make it more difficult for a correct voltage to form between the oxygen outside and inside of the bulb. As a result, the sensor may end up sending incorrect information to the computer.

In order to promote the best possible efficiency, you must be proactive about replacing faulty oxygen sensors. For more information, please

When shopping for a car, you can easily find yourself attracted to the shiny new vehicles that are out there. No matter how appealing a new car might seem, though, buying used can be a better decision. These are four ways buying a used car can help you save money.

            1. Lower Purchase Price

Perhaps the most obvious reason why a used car can save you money is the fact that you can generally find a lower purchase price with a used vehicle. Even if you're on a tight vehicle budget, you can probably find a used car that will suit your needs and that you can afford.

Even though you might still end up with a car payment if you choose to finance your used purchase, the payments will probably be cheaper than if you were to purchase a brand new car. Plus, you can often get a nicer car with more features for the same price than if you were to purchase a brand new vehicle.

            2. Cheaper Insurance

There are actually two reasons why you can often save money on insurance for a used car. For one thing, since the value of a used car is usually much lower than the value of a new one, the cost of insurance is often lower. Secondly, if you choose to buy with cash rather than financing your purchase, you can always opt to just pay for liability insurance rather than full coverage.

            3. More Affordable Vehicle Registration

In some states, vehicle registration costs are based off of the value of the vehicle that you are registering. If you're registering a brand new car, you might find that your registration costs will be higher due to the higher value of the vehicle. With a used car, though, the registration costs and fees might be lower. This means that you may be able to get the license plate for your car for less by buying used.

Along with being able to save on your vehicle registration costs, you might also be able to save on the property taxes that you pay on your vehicle by buying a vehicle of a lower value. This can help you reduce your tax burden.

            4. Cheaper Repairs

Many people don't put much thought into the cost of ownership when buying a vehicle, but maintenance and repairs can take a big chunk out of your budget if you aren't careful. If you buy a used car, however, you might be able to save on these things.

Buying used car parts can be a great way to get the parts that you need while still saving money. However, it can sometimes be difficult to find

              used car parts

for a new car. Luckily, finding used parts for an older car is often fairly easy, so this can be yet another way that buying used can help you save money.

Additionally, some people prefer to purchase original equipment manufacturer (OEM) parts for their newer cars, or they might be required to do so because of their warranty. These original parts can be more expensive. But with a used car, you can purchase aftermarket parts instead.

As you can see, buying a used vehicle is often a smart financial decision that can save you a lot of money. If you are in the market to purchase a vehicle, consider looking at your used options first. When you do, you might just find a vehicle that you like and that can allow you to enjoy these four benefits and more.

There's no substitute for test-driving a used vehicle before purchasing it. There are, however, some preliminary questions that can be asked before looking at a vehicle to determine whether it's worth test driving. If you're in the market for a used vehicle, ask a salesperson these questions before going to see any vehicle to determine whether it's worth test driving.

What Condition Is the Vehicle In?

First and foremost, find out what condition the vehicle is in. The condition will help you determine how long the vehicle might last and whether it's suited to your needs.

The exact condition you should look for will depend on how you'll be using the vehicle. If you'll be driving around clients, you probably want a car that's both reliable and aesthetically impeccable. If you want a deal and perform your own automotive work, something that's in rougher shape might be a bargain. Consider your needs, and then determine the condition you want.

Has the Vehicle Been in Any Accidents?

Second, find out whether the vehicle has been in any accidents. You don't need to avoid models that have been in accidents, for many vehicles that have been in fender benders are still safe and reliable. If a vehicle has been in an accident, however, you'll want to ask about the damage.

The salesperson you're talking to likely won't know the specifics of the accident, as they probably weren't the person driving when the vehicle was hit. They should, however, be able to provide some basic information.

Specifically, the salesperson's reports should not whether a vehicle was towed from the accident site and whether the airbags deployed. These are signs of more significant damage that could cause mechanical problems. If the airbags didn't go off and a vehicle drove away, the damage was likely minor.

Are the Vehicle's Service Records on Hand?

Third, not all used vehicles come with complete service records, but it's helpful when these are available. When service records are available, you can see how the vehicle was maintained and check whether major maintenance items were taken care of. For example, you can look up whether the timing belt has been changed or will need to be soon.

If service records aren't available, a vehicle might still be worth test driving. You may want to bring someone who's familiar with cars along for the test drive, though, so they can check to see what maintenance has been done.

Why is the Vehicle Priced as It Is?

Fourth, find out how the seller arrived at the listed price point. Unlike new cars, used vehicles don't come with manufacturer's suggested retail prices. Their prices are based on many factors, including age, mileage, condition, and features. Many of the factors are negotiable, and sellers expect to negotiate.

Knowing the seller's reasoning and how they weighed different factors will provide common ground for negotiating once you see the vehicle in person.

Is the Title In-Hand and Clean?

Finally, find out whether the vehicle's paperwork is in order. Ideally, the title should be in-hand, meaning the seller has it, and it should be clean. A clean title doesn't have any liens that need to be paid off before the vehicle can be sold.

If a vehicle's title is in-hand and clean, you can drive away with the car as soon as you pay for it. There will just be a couple of forms to fill out and sign, which can be done when you're paying. If the title isn't in-hand or clean, be prepared to wait a little while the seller gets the official title or pays off a lien.

If you are in the market for auto parts, your first thought may be to take a trip to your local auto parts store. While they may carry what you are looking for, there may be better places to secure your parts from. When you purchase your parts from a salvage yard not only will you save money on the cost of your part, but also you will be doing your part to help to save the environment. Just think of the three R's - reuse, reduce, and recycle.

          REUSE

When an accident takes place, or a critical component of a vehicle breaks and the owner deems it unfixable, there are many other components of the vehicle that are still in great shape. Many of these parts still have years of use left in them. With proper care, some parts may even live on to see owners after you.

If you are restoring, repairing, or rebuilding a vehicle, you may find yourself in need of numerous parts. It may think that it is your best interest to purchase another non-running vehicle just to source your parts from.

Unfortunately, you may still find yourself without the parts that you need. When you reuse parts purchased from the salvage yard, you will be able to get all of the parts that you need without having to worry about what to do with the parts you have left over.

Reusing parts not only help you but helps to create jobs in auto dismantling, as well as in the salvage industry. The money you pay for your parts stays in the local Corpus Christi community

          RECYCLE

Recycling auto parts saves you money. Depending on the part in question, this may range from a few dollars to hundreds, if not thousands of dollars. Most parts come with a 90-day warranty, so you are guaranteed that the part you purchase will work.

Recycling auto parts will save you time over a new part. Most are already assembled, and the old part can be pulled off, and the new part put on. This will save you considerable labor costs.

As sensitive as vehicles are this day and time, they can easily detect when something is not right, or a part does not fit exactly as it is designed. You will not have this problem with recycled parts.

Recycled parts are original equipment. They are not aftermarket parts; they fit as they were originally designed to do.

          1. FIND THE SERIAL NUMBER ON THE PART

One thing you can do to make finding the correct part for your car easier is by having the serial number ready to give to the salvage yard's representative. Many times, the number is engraved directly into the side of the part. However, if the part is old and rusted, you most likely will not be able to see the serial number right away.

Because the serial number is likely buried beneath rust, you will have to remove the oxidation first. To remove the rust on the car part, you do not have to buy an expensive rust remover. Instead, you can use white distilled vinegar and a wire brush.

If the part is small enough to submerge, place it in a bucket full of undiluted vinegar. However, if you are trying to find the serial number on the side of an engine, douse the rusted area with vinegar. Leave the vinegar on the part for several hours. The liquid will dissolve the bond between the oxidation and the metal. This dissolution will make the rust easier to remove.

Scrub the metal with the wire brush until you see bare metal. If you find the serial number, write it down and take it to the parts representative at the salvage yard so they can help you find the exact part. However, your part may not have a serial number because of its brand or age. If this is the case, continue to the next section for an alternative.

          2. BRING THE PART WITH YOU, IF POSSIBLE

If you are unable to find a serial number for the part or if the number is too worn to read, you could also bring the old part with you. The parts salesperson at the salvage yard can examine the part and match it to one that's already in stock or available in the yard.

This course of action can work well if you have a smaller part, such as the valve covers or old-style carburetor cap. However, if you are trying to find a motor or transmission, it is not feasible to remove the entire engine to take to the salvage yard.

          3. TAKE A SNAPSHOT OF YOUR CAR'S VIN TAG

If you do not have the serial number to the part and cannot take it with you to the salvage yard, then take a snapshot of your car's vehicle identification number (VIN) tag to show to the representative. If you are trying to find engine or transmission parts, the number on the VIN tag can give the representative detailed information about your car.

For example, if you are trying to find an engine for your car that matches the one it was originally built with, the representative can look at the fourth through eighth digits to find this information. These numbers represent codes that represent the power of the motor and the transmission and body style.

When having a vehicle repaired, drivers must decide whether to make the repair with new or used auto parts. Cost considerations favor quality used parts, but price isn't the only reason to opt for used parts. Environmental considerations also favor used parts. Here's how making auto repairs with used car parts helps the environment.

REDUCE HOW MANY PARTS GO TO LANDFILLS

Making auto repairs with used parts reduces how many used parts end up in landfills and dumps.

While a single part might not seem like much, the cumulative effect of making multiple repairs with used parts is significant. Up to a quarter of all cars end up in landfills, and those that go to a landfill don't decompose quickly. Every part that's kept out of a landfill helps reduce how much waste ends up in these dumps.

CONSERVE THE RAW MATERIALS NEEDED FOR NEW PARTS

Making auto repairs with used parts helps to minimize how many raw materials are used to make new parts. Because the need for new auto parts is lessened, so is the need for raw materials to make new parts.

Some of the materials that can be conserved are scarce or non-renewable. For example, platinum, palladium and rhodium - precious metals that are all rare - are used in catalytic converters. Additionally, oil and coal, which are not renewable, are needed to make plastics that are used throughout cars.

In the long term, this can have a major benefit for the environment. Not only will uncommon metals that must be mined be conserved, but so will resources that have a supply.

LESSEN THE ENERGY NEEDED TO MAKE NEW PARTS

Opting for used parts also reduces how much energy the automotive industry uses. Just as reducing the need for new parts reduces the need for raw materials, it likewise reduces the amount of energy used in the manufacturing of new parts.

MINIMIZE THE ENERGY USED TO TRANSPORT NEW PARTS

Sourcing used auto parts often uses less energy than sourcing new parts does.

Most new parts are made overseas, and they must be shipped from the manufacturing facility to a domestic distributor and then to an auto shop. In contrast, there are usually used auto parts readily available within a few miles. Even shipping a used part from a few states over takes less energy than sending one across the ocean.

Together, these third and fourth benefits help the environment in a big way. According to a Toyota study, 28 percent of a vehicle's carbon dioxide emissions are generated when the vehicle is manufactured and transported a dealership. A separate study by Seikei put this figure closer to 12 percent of a vehicle's emissions, but that's still a significant percentage.

Regardless of what figure is more accurate, it's clear that a lot of energy is required to make cars and ship them overseas. The same is true for new car parts, and it's easy to reduce how much energy is consumed by opting for used parts.

CREATE A RIPPLE EFFECT AMONG DRIVERS

Best of all, drivers who opt to have repairs made with used car parts rather than new ones have an opportunity to create a ripple effect.

Recycling is used in parts of the auto manufacturing industry, but few drivers are aware of the benefits that recycled used car parts offer. As drivers opt for used parts, the trend will become increasingly common - and more and more drivers will become familiar with used parts offer. Thus, drivers' choices now can pay dividends for the environment by increasing awareness.

Buying used car parts can be tricky. Before you begin buying used parts for your car, take a look at these four suggestions to make the process easier.

If you do your own vehicle work, are the owner of a collectible car, or perhaps just enjoy the challenging of restoring a "fixer upper," then you may already know the value of buying used car parts. You can save a lot of money by buying used car parts, and it might be the only way to find some vehicle parts, particularly for rare or vintage makes.

However, before you begin buying used car parts, you should know a few helpful suggestions that will make the process a lot smoother and help you avoid any hassles or problems. Below are several considerations to keep in mind.

FIGURE OUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN SAVE BY BUYING USED PARTS

Buying used car parts is a big money saver, but it is important to calculate how much money you can save by buying used. The best way to do this is by shopping around and making price comparisons.

You can establish a price baseline for used auto parts by finding the price for equivalent new parts. New part pricing can be obtained from several sources, including dealerships, auto parts retailers and online vendors. Typically, but not always, dealers will be the highest priced of any of the new parts retailers.

Finding this price baseline will be helpful because it will help you know if buying used is your best value. In rare cases, buying a new part may be only slightly more expensive and might be to your benefit.

          KNOW WHEN TO BUY NEW

As mentioned, there may be some occasions when buying a new part is a better deal when compared to an equivalent used part. However, keep in mind that not all new parts are factory quality, as some are inferior in quality to even used parts. Investigate where new parts were made and who manufactured them before making a purchase decision.

There may be other instances where buying a new part is preferable or even necessary; for example, it isn't sensible to buy a used oil filter. Here are a few examples of parts best bought new:

In addition, keep in mind that some other used components, such as catalytic converters, aren't permitted to be sold as used, so know the law in your area.

          PURCHASE A PARTS VEHICLE

If you are the owner of a vehicle that needs extensive work or restoration, then you may benefit by purchasing a similar vehicle simply for the purpose of providing parts. A non-running parts vehicle can often be bought for a lot less than a complete car, and it can provide you with an accessible, easy supply of parts.

When selecting a parts vehicle, look for a vehicle that is the same make and model as your car. If you aren't able to obtain an exact match, then find a parts vehicle that is as close to your vehicle specifications as possible. A parts vehicle that is too different may not have enough matching parts to make it worthwhile, but one that is within a year or two of your model may be perfectly fine.

When buying used car parts, you should seek to purchase them from a reputable dealer whenever possible. There are a variety of parts dealers in business, but not all of them adhere to the same standards, so it is beneficial to do a little homework before buying.

For example, look for a dealer that is organized and places a high value on keeping their parts well inventoried. In addition, experience means a lot, so be sure to buy from a dealer that thoroughly understands the used parts business and the needs of customers. Finally, keep in mind that reputable dealers will often offer a guarantee or warranty on their parts.

Used auto parts can be purchased at a lower price while not sacrificing quality or efficiency. A recycled and refurbished auto part will have all the complete parts you need for your vehicle, and will have typically come with a warranty or even an extended warranty. The cost savings for this quality part will be significant as opposed to purchasing a brand new part.

When purchasing used auto parts, you are doing your part to “go green,” and help the environment. Instead of quality usable parts going to your local dump or landfill, these parts are being used to keep your vehicle going. You are also reducing the need for more harmful emissions that go into the air when steel, mercury and oil are used to manufacture new auto parts.

Purchasing used parts actually opens up the amount of options for your vehicle, since it is likely the parts required for your vehicle are no longer being manufactured. Plenty of abandoned or unused vehicles have parts in perfect condition, and are widely available. The used parts dealer will have a good understanding about what older vehicles need, and will be able to point you in the right direction to find the best part for your car.
